Snowbasin
Snowbasin is located in the mountains east of Ogden, Utah. It has become a destination resort for year round fun, but it is perhaps most famous for its ski facilites.
Ever since the first person schussed down these slopes back in 1939, people have been coming here from all over the world. They love the exhilarating powder snow and the majestic mountain vistas. Snowbasin is one of the oldest operating ski areas in the nation.
In 1938, the ski pioneer Alf Engen and several Forest Service Employees hiked into the area known as Wheeler Basin and determined it would make an excellent location for a ski area. A contest was held to come up with a name for the new ski area. Geneveve Woods won the contest with her entry “Snow Basin” and it has become a huge public playground.
The first ski tow was operational in 1939 and hosted its first ski race in 1940, and attracted 75 racers. It has been through numerous improve-ments over the years and has the capacity today to handle 14,500 skiers per hour. It boasts 12 lifts, 64 designated runs and offers enjoyable runs for less-experienced and young skiers, making it a great family ski area.
Trappers Loop Road was constructed in 1989 to connect Huntsville to Weber Canyon, making Snowbasin one of the easiest resorts to reach from the Salt Lake International Airport. Snowbasin has now become a destination resort and gathering place for people from all over the world.
When Utah was chosen to host the 2002 Olympic Winter Games, Snowbasin was chosen to host the men’s and women’s Downhill, the Super Giant Slalom, and Alpine combined races. Its steep chutes, open bowls, deep powder glades, perfectly groomed cruisers, and some of the most challenging race courses ever followed down a mountain by skiers, combine to make Snowbasin a world class ski resort! From Thanksgiving through into the spring, the slopes welcome skiers looking for a true mountain adventure.
Snowbasins 2959 vertical feet of ski trails offer terrain to meet every-one’s needs. It boasts 3 cableways, short lift lines, and long high-speed lifts allow strong skiers and snow boarders to clock over 50,000 vertical feet in a single day.
Its 64 designated runs and unlimited off-piste skiing is included in more than 25,000 acres of open bowls, long pistes, and deep-powder glade skiing.
